PU Leather vs. Genuine Leather: What's the Real Difference?
Genuine leather is made from animal hide; PU leather is a synthetic material made by coating a fabric backing with polyurethane. Genuine leather is generally more breathable and develops a patina with age, while PU leather is cheaper, more uniform, easier to clean, and available in far more colors and finishes.

People searching for “PU and leather” or “leather and polyurethane” are usually trying to answer one practical question: is the cheaper synthetic option good enough, or is real leather worth paying for? The answer depends on the product, the budget, and what the buyer expects it to do.
How Each Material Is Made
Genuine leather starts as an animal hide that is tanned, dyed, and finished. Because it is a natural material, every hide differs in grain, thickness, and small marks.
PU leather is manufactured. A fabric or non-woven backing is coated with a layer of polyurethane resin and finished with an embossed or printed texture to imitate leather grain. Because it is made in rolls, appearance and thickness are consistent. For the full production breakdown, see What is PU Leather?.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Genuine leather | PU leather | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Animal hide | Fabric backing + polyurethane coating |
| Consistency | Varies hide to hide | Highly uniform |
| Breathability | Good | Lower (better in microfiber grades) |
| Aging | Develops a patina over time | Does not develop a patina; lower grades can crack or peel |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Colors and finishes | Limited by natural hides and dyeing | Very wide range |
| Water and stain resistance | Needs care and treatment | Generally easy to wipe clean |
| Animal-derived | Yes | No |
| Maintenance | Conditioning needed over time | Wipe clean; no conditioning |
Durability: It Depends on the Grade
Neither material is automatically “better” in durability.
- Full-grain genuine leather is among the most durable upholstery and goods materials and can last for decades with care.
- “Genuine leather” as a grade label often refers to lower layers of the hide with a corrected or embossed surface, and is not the same as full-grain or top-grain leather.
- PU leather quality varies widely by formulation and backing. Good PU leather performs well for years in everyday use, while low-grade or poorly stored material can crack, peel, or delaminate — especially some ester-based grades in hot, humid conditions.
- Microfiber leather, built on an ultra-fine fiber backing, is the closest synthetic option to real leather in structure and abrasion resistance — see Microfiber Leather.
Which One Should You Choose?
Genuine leather tends to fit when the product is premium-positioned, breathability and aging matter, or the buyer expects natural material.
PU leather tends to fit when you need consistent appearance across large volumes, a wide color or texture range, lower cost, easy cleaning, or a product with no animal-derived material. This is why PU dominates volume applications such as bags, footwear, sofas and furniture, and automotive interiors.
PU Leather in Global Trade
PU leather is not a niche substitute. In China’s export data, PU accounts for roughly 68–74% of plastic-coated synthetic leather exported by value, year after year. See the underlying numbers in our China PU Leather Export Trade Report.
